Grammar and Composition:

College Writing Center Websites that I Like:

  • Everett Community College (the site has links to a number of handouts pertaining to grammar and the writing process)
  • University of Idaho (this site’s Advanced Technical Writing cite provides useful formulae for essay writing)
  • University of Toronto (Their “Advice on Academic Writing” site, like Everett Community College, provides a number of handouts useful for the writing process).

 The Writing Process:

Shakespeare:

  • No Fear Shakespeare (Spark Notes, which is  a subsidiary of Barnes and Noble, has put together an excellent free site that makes the basic reading of Shakespeare much easier. Spark Notes are superior to CliffsNotes because they provide more than just a mere watered down version of the text. No Fear Shakespeare provides a side-by-side reading of Shakespeare’s plays, containing both the original texts and a modernized translation. Be warned, however: relying entirely on the modernized translations will frequently cause you to ignore important textual connotations!)
  • Shakespeare Navigators (A good site maintained by Phillip Weller, containing both notes and full texts of many of Shakespeare’s major plays. I frequently quote from this site.)
  • Shakespeare Online (A good site with lots of handy notes on the plays and sonnets. This is the site you go to for the inside scoop)

Microsoft Word Tutorials

Web Design Tutorials

  • Lynda.com: I have not yet tried it out, but it looks like this site provides a number of helpful tutorials on web design and other computer-related topics. There is a catch, though: it isn’t for free.
  • The New Boston: This site also provides tutorials on programming.
